September 16, 2021
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio released a joint statement after Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig affirmed that payments given by charitable organizations or directly by members of the public to victims in response to the tragic collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida are tax exempt.
Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio said, “We appreciate Commissioner Rettig’s confirmation that gifts to survivors of the Surfside tragedy are not taxable. This much-needed clarity means families struggling to rebuild their lives have one less thing to worry about. We will continue to work with federal, state, and local officials to support the families and the surrounding community.”
Earlier this month, Senators Scott and Rubio requested that the IRS provide clear guidance regarding the tax treatment of these charitable gifts.
