Sen. Rick Scott’s Bipartisan Resolution Condemning Communist China’s Abuse of Peng Shuai Advances in the Senate

February 17, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Rick Scott spoke on the Senate floor regarding the advancement of his bipartisan resolution supporting Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai. His resolution also rebukes the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its failure to clearly and forcefully challenge the Chinese Communist Party’s claims about her safety. Senator Scott has received the commitment of Senator Bob Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), to have this resolution marked-up and favorably reported out of the SFRC next month. The resolution is cosponsored by Senators Shelley Moore Capito, Sherrod Brown, John Hoeven, Ron Wyden, Ted Cruz, Jeff Merkley, Mike Braun, Chris Van Hollen, Marsha Blackburn, Bob Casey, Tom Cotton, Raphael Warnock, Ron Johnson and Jeanne Shaheen.

A companion, bipartisan resolution led by Congressman Michael Waltz and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives in December 2021.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Communist China’s silencing of Peng Shuai is wrong and the IOC’s cooperation with the authoritarian and oppressive communist Chinese regime in covering up this alleged assault is unacceptable. The United States should be the leading voice of freedom and democracy around the world, and we must make clear that we will never tolerate this kind of behavior. Today’s advancement of this important bipartisan resolution makes clear that the U.S. Senate stands with Peng Shuai and will continue to demand accountability and condemn the horrific abuses of the Chinese Communist Party. I appreciate Senator Menendez’s commitment to mark-up and favorably report this resolution in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and look forward to its passage on the Senate floor in the coming weeks.”
